2022-11-15

The construction of the Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway was inaugurated on Nov. 12 in Dhaka, capital of Bangladesh. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming attended the inauguration.

The project will be undertaken by Genertec CMC, and the Export-Import Bank of China will provide loans for the project. With a total contract value of over $1.3 billion, the elevated expressway is one of the major transportation infrastructure projects of Bangladesh in years.

The project will improve the transportation infrastructure of Bangladesh and promote its vital role in regional connectivity, Li pointed out, adding that it stands as another example of how Bangladesh's Vision 2041 plan and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) integrate and benefit the peoples of both countries.

Apart from a 24-km four-lane elevated expressway, the project also includes renovation of a 14.3-km existing road and construction of ramps, toll stations, and other ancillary works.

Upon completion, it will effectively reduce traffic congestion in the Ashulia industrial district in northern Dhaka, improve the transportation infrastructure of Bangladesh and facilitate the country's economic trade and exchanges with neighboring counties and China.

According to related documents, the project is also expected to boost the Bangladesh's gross domestic product by 0.21 percent.
